If you’ve never thought of the grocery store as a great place to look for ideas to spruce up your home, you’ve definitely been missing out, as crazy as it sounds. Here are a few of my favourite grocery store home decor finds.
This concept is going to sound absolutely nuts to some people, and just plain silly to others, but I love shopping for home decor at the grocery store. This kind of came out of the fact that there was a time back in the day when I was just so busy with family and work that the only time I really got out to real, in-person stores was when I went and did my weekly grocery shopping. Of course, I’ve always loved creating a beautiful home, so I started noticing a few things that I could pick up while on my weekly shopping trip that also allowed me to feel like I’d been out shopping for fun pretty things too! Now that I have a little more time and freedom, I have to admit that I still enjoy seeing what kind of fun, creative ideas I can come up with to give my home decor a little boost using basic items from the grocery store. It’s just kind of a fun challenge! Here are some of my favourite grocery store home decor items that I’ve come up with.
Clever Grocery Store Home Decor
I should probably note that I’m in Canada, and I usually shop at the Real Canadian Superstore, which is fun because they also sell actual home decor, so most of these items came from there. You can usually find all of this stuff at any regular grocery store though, so keep your eyes peeled no matter where you shop! (This post isn’t sponsored by RCSS, but it probably should be. Ha!)
Flowers
Who doesn’t love a little bouquet of simple grocery store flowers to brighten up their kitchen counter?
Wooden Cutting Boards
These add texture, warmth, and interest to your counter area without taking up much space at all. They’re also great for hiding outlets.
I really love that round one that I picked up a few weeks ago. It makes me happy. 🙂
Fruit
A big bowl of fruit in the middle of a table is a beautiful thing and can add a pop of color to an otherwise dreary-ish space. Keep this use in mind when you’re buying your fruit. What’s better than home decor that you can eat?
Big Glass Jars
Not only are these great for keeping all of your baking supplies organized and easy-to-use, they also look great on a shelf or on your counter. Most grocery stores carry a few different basic jar options.
Plain White or Clear Glass Pitchers
These are great to display on a shelf for a bit of farmhouse style, either on their own or in groups. They also make the perfect little farmhousey vase for so many different types of flowers.
Dried Beans, Rice, and Peas
These can make a really fun, economical filler for a vase or apothecary jar.
Basic White Candles
You can never have too many, especially during the winter months! Hygge!
Tea Towels
Tea towels are definitely a utilitarian kitchen staple, but a brightly coloured tea towel hung over the front of the sink or on the oven door handle can really brighten up a room. These simple black and white stripes really spoke to me.
Mason Jars
The grocery store is the best place to buy mason jars for all of your home decor and organizational needs. You’ll avoid the markup that you might end up paying at craft or home decor stores, where they can be pretty expensive compared to the basic ones that are sold in grocery stores and meant to be used for canning. Better yet, reuse the jars from your pasta sauce!
Plates
Even basic white plates can be used really effectively as home decor, either on a plate rack like ours, or hung on a wall. They look especially great in symmetrical groupings.
So those are all of my favourite grocery store home decor finds! Have you ever bought something from the grocery store to use to decorate your home?
