This year’s English country Christmas decor brings together elements of traditional farmhouse style with handmade touches to create a look that’s charming, lived-in, and welcoming.

This year’s holiday decor definitely has a very English Country Christmas feel to it, despite the fact that we actually live in a 120-year-old farmhouse in Canada. I’ve been so inspired to bring more cozy layers of pattern, texture, and personality into our home this year with patterned rugs, wallpaper, and beautiful curtains, and this has naturally translated into a charming, welcoming country-style Christmas as the year draws to an end. This year’s Christmas trends have been heavy on the nostalgia, from the Ralph Lauren Christmas trend, to the more minor Little Women Christmas decor that I’ve been seeing as well, and I think my English country Christmas decor falls somewhere in the middle, with roots in traditional, well-appointed rooms, and homemade, whimsical, and foraged elements gracing nearly every available surface. To me, this style just looks like joy, and that’s really kind of the whole point, isn’t it?
A Warm Welcome

Our mudroom is always the main point of entry for our home, so I think it’s important to add a little Christmas spirit in there, even with all the coats, boots, and soccer balls taking over the room most of the time. This space is always anchored by my console table, lamp, and my favorite gold arch mirror, so I really just need to fill in around those items with some garlands, fresh or faux greenery, and a bit of ribbon. You can see that this year I let my collection of blue and white ceramics steal the show in here, and while these might not be traditional Christmas pieces, I think they feel just right for our old house.

Christmas in the Kitchen

We painted our kitchen this beautiful pale blue by Benjamin Moore called “Mount St. Anne” earlier this year, and I was so excited to see how the room would look with Christmas greenery this holiday season. We also reconfigured our cabinets a bit to create more space around the window, allowing me to add in these new sconces on either side. I draped my favorite inexpensive artificial pine garlands over the window, and then filled in all around with fresh cedar gathered from our outside. When you start with everyday decor that you love, it doesn’t take much more than a bit of greenery and some ribbon accents to make the joyful magic of Christmas come to life in a space.

A Place to Gather for Meals and Game Night

Our little dining room is such a well-used area of our home. We use it daily for various meals, for family game nights, and for Christmas activities like building gingerbread houses. We’ll have Christmas morning breakfast and our holiday dinner here as well, and it’s perfect for our little family of four. This room is always cozy with its family heirloom furnishings, but I like to make it feel a little extra festive for Christmas with special plates on our plate wall (this year it’s part of my new Spode Christmas tree collection), greenery all around, and a few bows tied to adorn the room wherever I see fit.

The Coziest Room in the House

Our living room is always the heart of our home throughout the year. It’s right in the middle of the house, and although it isn’t a big room, it’s always cozy and welcoming. This becomes extra true at this time of year when the tree is up, and fresh greenery is all around to set the scene for cozy reading days, and watching Christmas movies together in the evening. We tried a spruce tree for the first time this year for our Christmas tree instead of our usual fir, and it does seem to shed needles a little more, but its fragrance is absolutely amazing! I’ve accented the tree with bows tied from collected bit of ribbon, vintage baskets, and gifts wrapped in ticking stripe and basic brown Kraft paper for a handmade feel.
