Farmhouse sink options have become so popular in kitchen renovations in recent years because of their beauty and functionality. Even if your home decor style isn’t the typical farmhouse look, this type of sink is still a great choice, and I have the photos to prove it.
Using a farmhouse sink in your kitchen renovation or new build is one of those amazing choices that allows you to be both timeless and on-trend at the same time. While farmhouse sinks have been a practical, hard-working choice for decades, they happen to also look beautiful and fit into many different design styles. You might think that this type of fixture would only make sense for a country-style kitchen or if your preferred home decor style leans towards modern farmhouse, but designers and homeowners are choosing an apron front sink for kitchens of a variety of different styles with great success.
All the kitchens pictured below are real spaces that we’ve visited and photographed. The designers and cabinet makers for each project are listed below the examples, and all photos are by Art & Spaces Photography. If you’re local to Southwestern Ontario, all the designers and cabinet shops listed below have all been thoroughly vetted by us over the years, and are great options to work with if you’re planning an upcoming remodel or new kitchen project. 🙂
Things to Consider When Choosing a Kitchen Sink
Whether you live in an original farmhouse that you’re trying to renovate and restore, or you live in a house with a totally different aesthetic, and you just love the practicality and look of a front apron sink, there are a few things to consider before you make your final decision. You want to be sure that the installation process of your new kitchen sink will work with your choice of countertop, as well as the garbage disposal system if you’re going to use one.
There are many different types of farmhouse sinks in different finishes currently available on the market that you might consider. A drainboard sink is a hardworking choice that will eliminate the need for a drying rack on your counter in the future when you’re washing dishes. A traditional enameled cast iron sink is a beautiful choice for an older home if you want to keep your design true to the style of your house. Hammered copper kitchen sinks are a really eye-catching option for homeowners looking to make their sink choice the focal point of the room.
Carefully plan for additional fixtures like the backsplash, kitchen faucets, built-in soap dispensers, sink grids, and your basket strainer as the way they pair with your choice of sink can have a big impact on how cohesive the design of the kitchen feels when it all comes together.
Other Places to Use Farmhouse Sinks
Smaller apron-style sinks also make great bar sinks because their deep bowls make it easy to rinse out or hide glassware, and they can even be used as an additional ice bucket if needed. Of course, the workhorse reputation of farmhouse sinks makes them a natural candidate to use for utility sinks, especially if something a little more elevated than the low-cost plastic utitlity sinks available at big box stores makes sense in a beautiful laundry room or mudroom. Some designers have even been known to use this style of fixture as a bathroom sink. They make a very practical choice to install into vanities in kids’ bathrooms, especially in a high-traffic space that will be used by a lot of family members.
