It’s amazing how many dollar store home decor finds I’ve picked up over the years that have really stood the test of time! Today I thought I’d share a few of my favourites!
I shared recently how I hadn’t really been into the dollar store much over the last few years. I went there recently to pick up some moss for my moss topiaries and it kind of reminded me of how many great little things you can find there. It got me thinking and I started to notice, as I looked around my house, how many dollar store home decor finds I’ve collected over the years and how many of them I still use on a regular basis. Some of these things I’ve had for over ten years and they’re things that I go back to over and over again. The dollar store is a great resource for anyone just starting out with making their house a home, or for anyone who just wants to play around with decorating their home without spending a ton of money. These dollar store home decor items were definitely worth the $1 investment! 🙂
Faux Greenery
Our Canadian dollar store, called Dollarama, isn’t only $1 items anymore, but for between $1-$4 you can find some great little things. Their topiary balls have been something that I’ve used for over ten years and I still have them all over the place in our home. They fit in with modern, traditional, or farmhouse style and I pretty much never put them away, I just move them around the house wherever I need to fill in the blanks a little bit. 🙂
Don’t worry if you aren’t near a Dollarama where you are, all dollar stores tend to carry these types of items I have listed here.
Some of the faux potted plants at the dollar store are really terrible, but then there are others that look even more real than the really expensive faux ones you can buy at fancier stores. I’ve even had people send me messages asking what type of plant they were because they thought they were real!
The dollar store also has a great selection of succulents. I think they look best if you pop them out of the styrofoam filled containers that they’re in and put them in your own “planter” like I did with this dollar store trophy planter recently.
Large Tote Bags
I bought this large burlap tote bag for $2 at the dollar store over ten years ago. Not only does it often make it into photos here on the blog, I also used it as a beach bag, a sleepover bag for the kids, and for everything else during that time too! Ten years later and it’s barely worn out! Definitely keep an eye out for these.
Galvanized Metal Containers
These have been catching my eye at the dollar store the few times that I’ve been over the last few years, but I always left them there because I just didn’t know what to do with them. This spring I learned how to age them perfectly using basic kitchen ingredients and I have a few from there now that I’ve used as planters or just as decor around the house. Visit this post here for details on how to use them successfully as planters: How to Use Galvanized Containers as Planters.
Votive Candle Holders
I found these mercury glass votive holders about eight or nine years ago and I’ve gotten a ton of use out of them. The candle holder area can look like it’s just full of tackiness, but if you look really closely you’ll be able to find some great things that you’ll use for years to come.
Vine Wreaths
Dollar stores often have great little grapevine wreaths, but I found this greyish one pictured here a few years ago that I thought was really neat. I recently saw a larger version of this selling for $100 in one of my other favourite stores!
Moss
Moss has so many great uses as a filler and as a crafting supply for home decor and the dollar store is definitely the best place to get it. It sells for (literally) 10 times the price at other stores and the moss is virtually the same. Dollar stores even have a few different choices for types of moss so why would you get it anywhere else?
Rope
Rope is great for getting crafty and adding texture to things like wreaths and planters, or adding handles on to DIY trays and bins. It can be expensive elsewhere, but the dollar store has great, sturdy rope just like this!
Glassware
I definitely need to do a better job of exploring the glassware options at the dollar store. They have great cups and glasses that can be perfect for when you’re setting a festive table and they also have a lot of great versatile pieces that can be used as home decor. Look for beautiful larger bowls that you can use on a coffee table or for unique containers like this vintagey looking bottle.
Baskets
Some of the baskets at the dollar store might seem a bit small for your family’s storage needs, but that’s not the only thing they can be used for! The basket in the middle of this trio that I hung on my wall is from the dollar store! Visit this post here to read about how I paint my cheapo baskets to look a little better.
Honorable Mention: Dollar Store Home Decor
Honorable mention goes to the following dollar store home decor finds!
Large straw hats
I don’t own any of these, but they have a great selection of plain and navy blue straw hats that would make a great display hanging on a wall.
Chargers and Plain White Platters
Use their cheapo chargers to design your own custom chargers for your table and use the platters to make a cute “Menu” chalkboard platter to hang in your kitchen!
Cake Stands
I saw some really cute ones there when I was getting the moss. A few days later I saw a lady using them in her booth in a craft show and they looked great! Look for them!
Candles
The dollar store is a great place to pick up all your plain white pillar candles and tall candle sticks.
Garden tools
Garden tools aren’t technically home decor, but the dollar store garden section has some great home decor potential. Look for galvanized metal watering cans, basic twine, and tiny galvanized metal buckets and trays.
