This slow cooker Chex mix only takes a few minutes to prepare and will ensure that you always have something to put out for everyone to snack on, no matter who pops by during the Holidays!
I hadn’t had Chex mix in years and years, but it’s something that was always kind of a classic holiday-time snack for me when I was growing up. Since I knew we’d be having people over to our house quite a few times this holiday season, I wanted to set myself up for success and make sure I always had something homemade to put out, no matter how last minute the gatherings might be. I put this slow cooker Chex mix together in a few minutes one day and it’s just the perfect thing to set out when everyone’s sitting together visiting during the holidays.
Ingredients for the Slow Cooker Chex Mix
- Chex cereal (I just used Rice Chex but you can use whichever non-sweet kind you can find, or a combination of different kinds)
- Plain Cheerios cereal
- Mini Pretzels
- Sunflower Seeds
- Soy sauce and red wine vinegar
- Nutritional yeast (if you’ve never tried this, it’s basically like super healthy non-dairy cheese flakes. They give you a good dose of b vitamins and add a cheesy flavour! This should be a pantry staple for everyone in my humble opinion 🙂 )
- Garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder
- Butter substitute (such as Earth Balance spread)
I wanted to make this delicious, but I also wanted it to be something that pretty much everyone could eat, so this Chex mix is vegan and also nut-free.
You can get really creative with all kinds of different additions to your Chex mix, but I usually like to keep things simple when I’m making something for a large group of people so no one gets left out… or freaked out by any weird/adventurous ingredients like I would add if I were just making this for myself.
Making the Slow Cooker Chex Mix
When I say this only takes a few minutes to put together, I really mean it! You basically just need to toss the cereals, pretzels, and sunflowers seeds directly into your slow cooker, then combine the other ingredients to create your seasoning mix.
Pour the seasoning mix over the stuff in the slow cooker, mix it up all up really well, then let it do its thing!
I used my casserole-style Crock Pot and I found that made it really easy to stir and get all the pieces nicely coating with the seasoning mix, but I don’t think the shape of slow cooker that you use has any effect on cooking time or the deliciousness of the final result. 🙂
