These homemade toilet cleaning tabs are a safe and natural way to blast away stains and buildup on your toilet, plus they’re fun to make!
Did you know that it’s possible to turn cleaning toilets into a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy? OK, that may be a bit of a stretch, but these homemade toilet cleaning tabs are definitely amusing. First of all, I made them in these cute little flower shapes (because, why not?), and also it’s pretty fun to drop one into the bowl of your toilet and watch it fizz and bubble away as it loosens stains and makes scrubbing the toilet so much easier. I also love that they’re safe and natural so you don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals being a problem like with some other commercial toilet cleaning products.
Here’s how to make them!
How to Make the Homemade Toilet Cleaning Tabs
You’ll need:
- Citric acid
- A silicone ice cube or baking mold
- Baking soda
- Dish soap (I used a pink, tropical floral scented one for fun)
To a medium bowl add 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/8 cup of citric acid.
Squirt in about 1/2 teaspoon of the dish soap.
Mix everything together well using either a whisk or your hands. You want to get to a point where the mixture is still sandy and quite dry, but where it will hold together if you squeeze it in your hands. Add a bit more dish soap as needed to make the mixture stick together, but do it in very tiny amounts of about 1/4 teaspoon. If you go overboard and add too much dish soap, you’ll get a really foamy mess that will just bubble it’s way right out of your molds.
Press the mixture into your mold and keep an eye on your tabs for about 5 minutes. The mixture will probably bubble up and expand a bit out of the tops of the molds during this time. Simply press them back down into the mold with your finger whenever they start to bubble up. After about 5 minutes, they should settle down and stop expanding on you and you can just leave them to dry.
Let them dry overnight then pop them out!
Store the homemade toilet cleaning tabs in an airtight container.
To clean your toilet, drop a tab in and watch it bubble and fizz! If you do this regularly, just the tab alone should be enough to keep your toilet clean, fresh, and sparkling! If your toilet is a little more far-gone you may need to do just a bit of scrubbing as well, but it should be pretty easy!
