Try this slow cooker apple pie dump cake the next time you want a family-style comfort food dessert that will feed a crowd! So easy to make and dangerously tasty!
I don’t make these types of desserts very often, but I had this idea for a slow cooker apple pie dump cake in my mind and I just had to try it out to see if it would be as good as I thought it would. It was better. 🙂 I like to call these types of cakes “junk pile cakes” because the method that you use to make them ends up looking very much the like junk piles that we get in our driveway when we’re in the middle of a big renovation. Unlike a big renovation, however, this cake takes very little manual labour and there should be little-to-no swearing involves in the whole process. Ha!
I have to say that this is a super, super indulgent dessert. Although it can be made plant-based, it’s still a dessert. This is not health food, people. It’s so good though and it’s totally worth it to indulge every once in awhile. I made this on Family a couple of weeks ago and my kitchen smelled delicious for the few hours that it was “baking” away in the Crock Pot on the counter.
Tools and Ingredients Needed to Make the Apple Pie Junk Pile Cake
You will need:
- 1 Slow Cooker (I like to use my casserole style Crock Pot for these types of dessert. Just great for serving out of.)
- White cake mix (or, even better, just use a batch of homemade cake mix instead)
- Apple pie filling
- Butter (or plant-based butter substitute)
- Brown Sugar
- Cinnamon
Slow Cooker Apple Pie Dump Cake: Method
You’re definitely going to feel like you’re breaking some rules making a cake this way, but just trust the process. 🙂
You’ll be dumping a few of the ingredients straight into your slow cooker, placing the lid on top, then leaving everything to cook for a couple of hours before you do anything else.
After a bit of cooking time, you’ll stir everything together, add a couple more ingredients, then you’ll replace the lid and let it cook for awhile longer. That’s it!
The resulting cake is moist, messy, and so delicious topped with plant-based coconut whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. This is not a fancy cake. It’s a mess and it’s so wonderful, as you can tell from the photos. My favourite part is how the apples get all nicely caramelized from the slow cooking process. You can’t beat it!
