I loved last year’s Christmas decor so much, so I kept much of it just the same, with a few slight variations here and there. Read on to see this year’s black and white Christmas decor in our living room!
I was enjoying all the moody matte black accessories that I had in the living room this fall, and when it came time to decorate, I honestly didn’t really want to put them away. So I decided to go with it. One of the things I’ve learned is that if you have a good, solid collection of basic Christmas decor that’s fairly neutral, you can easily change the look a bit every year with some fresh ribbon and a few key accessories. So I went with black. In my head it sounded like it might be a little strange, but I think it actually turned out to be quite elegant. So I’ll show you what I did to bring together our black and white Christmas decor.
Black and White Christmas Tree
Of course, all Christmas decor revolves around the tree. 🙂 I used this really lovely birch bark ribbon that I found at Michaels this year to dress the tree and to make the topper. You can see my explanation of how to add vertical ribbon to your Christmas tree here: Vertical Christmas Tree Ribbon, and I explain how I make my favourite Christmas tree bow toppers here: How to Make a Bow Christmas Tree Topper.

All of the ball ornaments in whites, silvers, and golds in various sizes were reused from past years. I added a few more of the giant pine cones to my collection, and a few more of the white berry picks to fill things out, but I had quite a few of those in my bins already too.
My favourite part is the little black bows. Jack and Kennedy helped me decorate this tree and Jack was not happy at all with me when I added those bows, but they remind me of little bow ties and kind of make me think that we’re about to host a fancy Christmas soiree in here at any second.:)
Black Christmas Decor Ideas
A lot of the other things I used were just seasonless decor pieces combined with some greenery clipped from around the property. It’s amazing how everyday decor items, a few brass elements and some things gathered from outside can seem so quintessentially Christmassy when they’re brought together. I love how quiet and peaceful the black and white Christmas decor scheme feels during this busy time of year.
When you can use things you already have in a Christmassy way, it really cuts down on the clutter in the basement! For the record, I did order a Christmas version of this Nest candle and it came in a couple of days after we shot these photos. I’m happy to report though that my shelves and bins in the basement will not be overflowing when I put away this year’s Christmas stuff. That’s the best feeling. 🙂

And that’s this year’s black and white Christmas decor! It’s a little more subdued than last year’s blue and white decor, but of course there are still hints of the blue and white happening in the room, as there probably always will be. How do you feel about using black and white for Christmas? Does it work for you, or do you find yourself craving more color at this time of year?
