If you like mason jar crafts as much as I do you will love this DIY mercury glass mason jar air freshener. It’s so much fun to make, looks great and it’s a very effective air freshener too!
I’ve been doing a lot of organizing and decluttering this Spring and it’s become pretty clear that I have a bit of a jar hoarding problem. You too? 🙂 I really do love them and I always think I’m going to use them for something amazing, but I never seem to get around to doing jar projects quite as often as I’d like to. Until last week, that is! I made this cute mercury glass mason jar air freshener and that seemed to get me started on a jar-crafting roll, so I’ll have a few more ideas coming up for you in the next little while!
If you’d like to make something like this air freshener, here’s how to get started! It’s super easy, of course!
- A jar
- Some essential oil, whichever scent you’re in the mood for. I used lavender!
- Some baking soda
- Some scrapbooking paper (mine looks like wood! So neat!)
- A small-sized hole punch
- Mirror spray paint (optional)
I started out by spray painting my jar. You don’t have to do this of course, but I wanted my air freshener to look more like a fun decorative piece rather than a jar of white powder, so I went ahead and painted mine. I used a mirror finish spray paint on the inside of the jar to get the mercury glass look and then I used an oil-rubbed bronze paint on the lid ring thingy.
To make this a really easy project, I used a piece of scrapbooking paper for the top and just punched a few holes in it with a mini heart punch to let the scent escape and the bad odors be absorbed. I had a not-so-smart moment and tried tracing around the lid to get my circle shape for the top. Don’t do this!
I couldn’t figure out why my piece of paper wasn’t fitting properly once the lid was twisted in place. Of course it was too big! So use the top of the jar itself to trace your circle. I need to get more sleep. 🙂
So that’s how you make your air freshener jar. I think it turned out really cute for such a simple project!
To make the actual air freshening part of this mason jar air freshener project, fill your jar with about a cup of baking soda and about 25 drops of your essential oil. Shake it all together to combine. The baking soda will absorb unpleasant smells and the essential oil with give your room a nice soft scent. I’ve been really enjoying lavender lately so that’s what I used. Give your jar a little shake every few days to refresh the scent and change your mixture out to something new and fun each season!
This was a really fun little craft to use up one of my many jars and I love that it’s pretty but also functional!
Do you have a big stash of jars that you’ve been saving for when inspiration strikes? What kind of clever jar craft ideas have you come up with?
