No need to run to the store if you have a recipe that calls for this particular type of flour that not many of us keep in the pantry at all times! Here’s how to make your own self-rising flour!
I have a little bit of a love/hate relationship with weird non-staple ingredients showing up in recipes. I always enjoy the adventure of trying a new food or cooking with a new ingredient, but there are times where it just seems wasteful to buy a really specific ingredient just for one recipe, especially when I don’t know when I’ll use that ingredient again. Self-rising flour is one of those ingredients for me because I usually bake with whole wheat or whole grain spelt flour and I like to buy them often so that that my supply stays fresh. I usually stay away from recipes calling for self-rising flour because I feel like I’ll probably buy it once and then it will sit in my cupboard and get old for years before I think of using it again. I recently learned that you can easily make your own self-rising flour though and that just changed everything. 🙂
Ingredients Needed to Make Your Own Self-Rising Flour
You’ll need:
- A flour type of your choice (all-purpose, whole grain, gluten free baking mix, etc.)
- Salt
- Baking powder
This is also a great trick to know about if you have dietary restrictions and need to use a specific type of flour in your baking.
Just a little side note: You can also make your own baking powder using this recipe here if you’re out. 🙂
How to Make Your Own Self-Rising Flour
To make the self-rising flour, just combine:
- 2 cups flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Sift everything together and mix really well, then use it as it’s called for in your recipe. If you happen to go through a lot of self-rising flour in your house, you can definitely mix up several batches and store them together pre-made in a big canister.
I’m going to be experimenting a lot more with recipes containing self-rising flour now that I don’t have to worry about it being such a wasteful thing to buy! I have a few recipe ideas for this flour that I’m hoping to be able to share with you soon!
Did you know that you can make your own self-rising flour or is this big news for you the way it was for me? 🙂
