We definitely got a taste for jerk chicken back in January when we went for our little after-Christmas trip to Jamaica. If you’ve ever had jerk chicken, or jerk anything for that matter, you know that it’s a really unique flavor that’s kind of hard to put your finger on. It’s a little sweet, a little spicy, a little exotic, and a little familiar all at once.
Actually, when you learn to make your own homemade Jamaican Jerk Seasoning, you learn that the flavors are really all super familiar and common in most of our spice cupboards, but mixing them together gives them culinary super powers. 🙂
One of the things that I love about making my own homemade spice mixes, besides the fact that I never have to worry about running out of something, is that I learn so much about what’s actually in those seemingly magic pre-made spice mixes that you can buy at the store. Knowledge is power, my friends! 🙂 Not only do you save money by doing it yourself, but you can actually customize your spice mixes a bit to your own tastes and they often end up tasting much fresher too.
So here’s my recipe for homemade Jamaican Jerk Seasoning.
Ingredients:
- 3 Tablespoons Onion Powder
- 2 Tablespoons Sea Salt
- 1 Tablespoon Thyme
- 2 Teaspoons Allspice
- 2 Teaspoons Cinnamon
- 1/2 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
Combine all of your ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
Store your spice mix in an airtight container in a cool and dark place. This recipe makes enough to fill a mini mason jar, but feel free to double it if this is one that you think you’ll use often!
It’s amazing how combining these simple herbs and spices that were already in my cupboard allowed me to create something that really just makes me feel like I’m in a whole other country! Your spice cupboard is a powerful thing if you know how to use it! 🙂
To make jerk chicken, create a marinade for the chicken using the spice mix, lime juice, brown sugar, and hot peppers if you’re brave! Marinate for a few hours and then grill or bake your chicken!
Have you ever tried Jamaican Jerk seasoning before? Definitely give this one a try the next time you’re looking to try something a little different!
