I went super simple for the mudroom this year and just headed out on a walk around the property to gather some greenery to bring a little Christmas cheer to our entryway. Here are my natural cedar Christmas decorations in our mudroom.
We love our Christmas decorations in this house, but the whole process can be a little overwhelming for me sometimes. Between all the bins of stuff that have to be brought out of the basement, the pressure to make everything magically perfect, and the fact that everything looks like a bomb went off while you’re actually doing the decorating, it gets to be a little too much and I often feel a bit like a deer in the headlights when I start thinking about all that needs to be done. So this year I started on this tiny space in the mudroom. I wasn’t even going to share it. It was a warm-up for the real decorating. 🙂 I just thought I’d bring a little bit of natural Christmas cheer to our entryway to set the tone and maybe actually have some fun while I was doing it. So I went out on a little walk around the property and clipped some greenery and I kind of love the simple look of it in here. So I am sharing it. Here are my natural cedar Christmas decorations in our mudroom for this year.
Natural Cedar Christmas Decorations from the Backyard
I know I’m not at all alone when I say that I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the pressures of Christmas decorating this year. I’ve heard from quite a few people who said they were feeling a bit grinch-y this year and were having trouble getting into the Christmas spirit and getting motivated to start decking the halls. I guess that’s why I’m sharing this? Just to show that decorating your home can literally be your job and it can still be OK to do something simple and sweet and no-fuss. It can take 20 minutes and cost nothing and it can still be the stuff that fond memories are made of. Let me show you a little more closely what I added in here for just a bit of Christmas cheer.
In a moment of inspiration, I decided to make my own garland to go over the mirror. This is super simple to do and this one took me about 15 minutes to make. I made some for the porch a few years ago, but I haven’t done this in quite awhile, so I thought it would be fun. It was. These will last and stay green for quite a few weeks, you just want to avoid touching them too much after awhile because they’ll start to get a bit crispy. 🙂

I also moved my fiddle leaf fig that loves the windows in here temporarily to another spot and brought in a current favorite vase (borrowed from my art & spaces styling supplies 🙂 ) for a mixed greenery arrangement. Just some twigs, more cedar, and white pine. It reflects the kind of quiet peaceful season I always hope for.
Other Natural Elements in my Christmas Decor
Just a note on the white pine: If you’re lucky enough to have some growing in your yard, always clip that about ten seconds before you plunk it into your vase and avoid using it without alone any kind of vessel, because it is sappy. It’s so beautiful, but it definitely makes a big mess, so proceed with caution.
I have to say, my very favorite parts are these next two little details. I found the most perfect aged brass candle holder while I was at a thrift store with Kennedy a few weeks ago. It’s just right at home here next to this little gold-framed painting.
I was having such a nice time walking around the property and clipping this and that, so I ventured over to the garden to see if there was anything interesting happening there. I’d admired the sedum late last winter, so I decided to clip a little bundle and see how it would look inside. All it needed was a little black velvet ribbon and it was perfect.
I don’t do all my Christmas decorating this way, but maybe one day I will. Foraged Christmas decor is always my favorite and natural cedar Christmas decorations are my go-to just because we have so much of it growing in our tree line.
Are you going all out for Christmas this year, or have you kept it simple in some parts of your home like I have?
