This DIY air freshener is a simple, all-natural way to scent your home and keep your air smelling fresh and clean.

I really love a fresh-smelling home. It boosts my mood and makes me feel like all is right in the world. That being said, I can’t really ignore all the bad things I read about how some of the air fresheners that you can buy in the stores are just loaded with toxic chemicals. There are a lot of more natural and healthy home scent products you can find too, which are great, but sometimes it’s fun to experiment, make your own, and know exactly what it is that you’re spraying into the air you breathe. Making your own DIY air freshener spray is easy, economical, and fun, too, so why not?

Ingredients Needed for the DIY Air Freshener Spray

The ingredients are super simple, and you may already have them in your home. You’ll need:
- Water
- Essential oil in your choice of scents
- Baking soda
You’ll also need a spray bottle (something like these glass bottles is best, I also love these amber colored bottles) and a funnel. I just made my own funnel with a scrap piece of paper.
Essential oils can be bought online or in health food stores. You can use a single scent, or you can experiment and mix a few different scents using what you have to create your own non-toxic fragrance.

Method for Preparing the Homemade Air Spray
To begin, you’ll need a small bowl. Place about a tablespoon of the baking soda into the bowl and drip in about 30-35 drops of essential oils. Some recipes call for 15-20 drops, but I don’t find that to be nearly enough.
For my air freshener, I used:
- 12 drops lemon essential oil
- 12 drops lavender essential oil
- 6 drops rosemary essential oil
This makes a lovely, fresh, clean scent perfect for any time of year. For fall, you may want to experiment with spicy scents like ginger, cloves, and cinnamon. For Christmas, try mandarin and cloves, and for spring, try grapefruit and lemon.
Mix the essential oils into the baking soda until the oils are evenly dispersed and you have a crumbly mixture. The purpose of the baking soda is to carry the essential oils and allow them to mix with the water, so your air freshener doesn’t separate. If you don’t believe me, try it for yourself. It works like a charm. 🙂

Take a funnel and place it in your bottle, or make your own funnel with a piece of paper, like I did. Carefully transfer the baking soda/essential oil mixture to the bottle.

Top your bottle up with water, give it a little shake, and you’re good to go! You can add a little label, too, if you’re so inclined. I just like the look of these plain glass bottles. I use these all over the house for different things, and I usually just leave them blank. I always know what’s in them because I’m the one who fills them, so it’s not an issue. 🙂
