How to keep marshmallows fresh so you’re always ready for your next campfire! This is such a simple and effective way to keep marshmallows from going stale.
I’ve been on the low-key lookout for a good trick to keep marshmallows fresh for a few years now. Of course, the solution to this problem turned out to be the simplest, most obvious idea ever. It usually works out that way, doesn’t it? We of course love to go camping as a family and we definitely bring a big fresh bag of marshmallows along for that, but there are other occasions that require marshmallows on a semi-regular basis as well, so this is for those times. 🙂
We have a little fire pit out back and we like to have camp fires every now and then in the evenings if it’s a really nice night or we just want to pretend we’re camping for an hour or two. Of course, where there’s a camp fire and kids, there must be marshmallows!
How to Keep Marshmallows Fresh for Impromptu Campfires
A backyard camp fire isn’t really a big, go-all-out kind of event though so we really don’t need to open up a full, fresh bag of marshmallows every time we have one. It’s nice to have the roasting sticks and a few marshmallows ready to go though for when we need them.
We’d usually open a bag, use a couple of marshmallows, and then toss the bag in the cupboard, but inevitably the next time we went to grab the marshmallows for a campfire, they’d be hard and crunchy. Just not roast-able at all. This little tip solves that issue and ensures we’re all good to go when it comes to camp fire marshmallows roasting!
My Top-Secret Method to Keep Marshmallows Fresh
So here’s what you do!
First, open a a bag of marshmallows and roast some. You can roast them until they’re perfectly golden brown, or burn them to a crisp. Whatever you prefer. We won’t judge. 🙂
When you’re done with the bag of marshmallows, fold the open end over a few times and click it shut. I use these plastic clothespins and they work really well.
Next, toss the bag in the freezer!
Seriously. It’s that easy.
And it’s really obvious too, isn’t it? Definitely one of those “why didn’t I think of this sooner?” moments for me. 🙂
I just always thought that marshmallows were stored at room temperature in the cupboard and that was that. It’s funny how a lot of things are like that.
When you’re ready to roast marshmallows again, simply take a few out just before you want to use them and get roasting! They’ll be ready to be skewered onto a roasting stick in just a minute or two, so no need to plan ahead.
And that’s all there is to it! Do you store your marshmallows in the freezer or do you have another trick for keeping marshmallows fresh?
