As far as DIY projects go, this one is definitely one of the simplest, easiest, and maybe even least creative that you could come across, but it’s just so darn effective and so darn cheap! I also like that these turn out to look more kind of textural and stylish instead of weird and tacky like some napkin ring crafts can be. If you’re trying to figure out a few fun ideas for setting an interesting table for a holiday or dinner party, but don’t want to spend a fortune, this one should be at the top of your list!
I love how these little napkin rings allow you to add so much personality and texture to your table, but require very little in the way of crafting skills. Plus they’re great for using up an overgrown ribbon stash! 🙂
Here’s how to make your own ribbon-wrapped napkin rings!
First start out with some old napkin rings that you have, but don’t really use all that often because they’re either ugly, or scratched up, or both. If you don’t have any napkin rings that meet that description, you can either buy some plain, unfinished napkin rings for crafting, use plastic shower rings from the dollar store, or even cut out rounds from a sturdy paper towel roll! Anything ring-like will do!
You’ll also need some ribbon, of course! You can find thin, 1/4″ ribbon like I used here pretty inexpensively at craft stores and dollar stores, or you can definitely make use of your ribbon stash. If you’re a frequent ribbon collector, but an infrequent ribbon user, then this is the perfect project!
With these napkin rings I made, each ring used about 2 yards of ribbon, so plan for that.
Start by using your hot glue gun to attach the end of your piece of ribbon to the inside of the napkin ring. Start wrapping the ribbon around, making sure to overlap your ribbon rows slightly. Add a little more glue under your ribbon about ever three times around or so to keep things in place.
Once you’ve made it all the way around your napkin ring, trim the end of the ribbon and attach it with a little more glue to the interior of the ring!
Done!
Make enough rings for everyone at your table, or feel free to mix in a few of these rings with some different napkin rings like I’ll be doing this year. You could even use 2 different ribbon designs and alternate two different colors of ribbon-wrapped napkin rings down your table, or get really creative and make a different napkin ring for each place setting! Anything that makes your table just a little more fun and interesting to look at is a good thing, so this is a great little way to mix things up without going too overboard. 🙂
What do you think of these easy napkin rings? Are you going to be adding any DIY elements to your table settings this fall?
Don’t forget to pin this idea so you have it for when the holidays roll around in a couple of months!
