If you have kids, then you know what a beating their rooms can take. Well, actually, you know what a beating your whole house can take, but let’s just talk about their own rooms specifically today. 🙂 Kids’ rooms are often some of the hardest working rooms ins our homes. They can be hangout spaces, snack rooms, crafting areas, party rooms, pet gathering places, and so on and so on. They’re kids, they’re having fun, and that’s amazing. It’s amazing that you as a parent have provided them with a place to use for all those fun activities too! But sometimes, despite all of our best efforts in setting up these spaces, even the most well planned out room renovation can’t stand up to the wear and tear of daily activity from kids. Well, not completely anyway.
We renovated Kennedy’s room for her secretly a couple of years ago when she was away at summer camp. We really tried to make the room super functional, provide lots of practical storage, and of course make it look really fun too. You can read more about that renovation here and see how it looked back then. She still loves the style and colors of the room, but of course as she has gotten older, she’s collected more “stuff” and her storage needs have changed. She’s also had a lot of friends and pets through this room over the last few years and things were just starting to look a little tired in there recently. This “back to school” time of year always seems right for fresh starts and new beginnings, especially for kids, so it’s a great time to do a little room refresh project like this for them. Send them back to school feeling organized and like they have a special place to retreat to at the end of a hard day!
The first thing that I started to address were some of the storage issues. Of course, your best first course of action is always to go through everything and eliminate everything that you don’t absolutely love or need. In other words, get rid of your junk! And that’s exactly what we did! I just love a good junk-purge. 🙂
I stocked up on some fun patterned storage bins for her giant wall of shelves to get really organized with all of the different types of items that she needs to keep there, but also to give us some room to grow, storage-wise, because of course she’s going to continue to accumulate more stuff as time goes on. Having some extra storage space now means we can stay organized a little bit more easily, for a little bit longer this time.
OK, so if you look closely at those flowers on her desk, you can see that I actually started this little room refresh in the spring, but we finished it in the fall, so that’s what counts. 🙂
Kennedy’s got quite a collection of art supplies too, so we had to whittle that down a little bit and come up with some good solutions that make it easy to actually make art with all of those supplies!
…and then of course we labeled everything like it was going out of style. Kennedy and I both have our own label makers, so things can get a little crazy when we both get labeling at the same time!
So after we had a bin for every type of art supply, every category of clothing in her closet, and every other miscellaneous type of item that you can think of, things were looking pretty good. Of course we gave everything in the room a good wipe-down, but something was still a little bit off. That’s when I really started to realize just how beaten up her rug had gotten.
We managed to keep it looking pretty good most of the time with frequent spot-cleaning and almost constant vacuuming, but there was no doubt that the rug had seen better days. It wasn’t the highest quality rug to begin with and that’s not always the best idea for a rug in a kid’s room, or for any kind of heavily patterned rugs. I do love a good cheap, plain rug for quite a few rooms in the house, but this room is not the room for that!
I was starting to look around here and there for a similar, but better, rug to replace this one when Justin from Rug Expedition emailed me to see if I’d be interested in working with them. I browsed around the site for quite a while and got sucked into looking at rugs of every single type ever know to mankind, and then eventually I got focused and found one that I fell in love with for Kennedy’s room!
And I asked him if he’d be interested in sending it to me. So I could sample the product of course, before I let you know whether it was something you should be checking out if you’re in the market for a rug too. 🙂 And he said yes!
So here’s the new rug in her room!
Do you see how she even labeled her dresser drawers? 🙂 Such an organized girl!
I’m always amazed at what a striking difference a new rug can make in the overall feel of a room, even if that rug is similar to the old one! The whole room feels so new and fresh and clean now!
This rug has been put through the kid’s room stress-test for the last few weeks and it’s really just as soft and fluffy as it was when we first put it down. I’m definitely impressed with how welcoming and cozy it makes the room feel and how easy it is to vacuum.
I actually think this particular rug would even look great in a living room or a home office if your decorating tastes are a little more on the adventurous side. The black parts have a bit of speckling in them that make it look a little more sophisticated than a rug that you would normally just use in a kid’s room.
This particular rug is called the Super Shag Zebra Cream/Black, but definitely check out the rest of the site if you’re in the market for a new rug. I love a site like this because they’ve got just about any style of rug in any size that you could be looking for and they’ve always got such a huge selection of sale/clearance styles that you’ll almost always be able to find something that you love at a marked-down price!
But wait… there’s more!
