Oh yeah.... mulch!

The heat wave is gone this week and the weather has just been so perfect. Let's go for a little walk outside. I want to show you what I've been working on out here for 15 minutes every day.

I re-learned something that I've forgotten about this year. You guessed it. Mulch. You see, I've been working away at ripping out all this landscaping fabric and pink stone that we've got in every single flower bed around this house.

During the process I've had images in my head of big full perennial garden planted to the brim, with something always in bloom, perfectly timed with the seasons.

Then I realized that's a whole lot of plants. Big, expensive plants. Big, expensive plants that take years to grow.

If only there was something to help me fill in the gaps. Some kind of product that would make my garden look less neglected, but would still allow me to plant new things without having to spear my way through layers of plastic and fabric.

Oh yeah.. Mulch.

So I can take an area like this:

And then go to the local recycling depot, which is where people take things like this branch knocked down during a storm....

To be turned into this stuff!

To be picked up by me for free to use in my garden!

After a bit of weeding of course.

Chris started to make this neat path in the garden too using our free mulch. You can see it needs some of my weeding skills as well.

So that's one little corner checked off my list as looking presentable. As you can see, though, I have a fair amount of space left to fill in to fulfill my flowery visions.

The free mulch sure helps though. Check out your local recycling centre. Maybe you can get free natural mulch too!

If you let friends and neighbours know that you are looking for perennials, they are often more than happy to split some. By next year you will see them grow so much.

We need to re-mulch the beds in our front yard. But that will have to wait until it cools off. Sometime in November, maybe :)

It's looking good!

Isn't mulch wonderful? You are so lucky to get it for free! It's expensive here, so I use fall leaves that hubby chops up with the lawn mower. I have plenty of that! Your property is beautiful with it's wide open spaces. xx

Looking good! Love the tip about checking with the recycling center for free mulch. If you lay newspaper about 8 pages thick under your mulch you'll have virtually no weeds and the ones that do will have shallow roots so they will be easier to weed. You can also throw the leaves from those beautiful trees in the fall on top of your mulch (chop them once or twice with the mower first) and they'll add another layer of mulch and fertilizer. Totally agree about asking for divisions of perennials - fall is a great time - by spring the owners plant is back to full size anyways so they won't mind!

We recycle mulch too, isn't it awesome?! We are still working our way through a pile that came from the tree that was being cut down across the street. Love the great photos of your wonderful property!
Cheers, Andrea

Your property is beautiful. The mulch makes such a difference. It just makes everything look more finished. How wonderful that you were able to get it at the recycling center!

I would love it if you would share this at my new Smart Solutions linky party. You can link up here:

Our city has a special event to mulch trees after Christmas. You can bring your own bag and take home as much as you want to use when spring comes. And if you put out the word you want plants, lots of folks will be happy to let you take extras when they're changing beds or dividing stuff too.

I love how much space you have! I'm glad you are finding free mulch and I like all the advice here in the comments about splitting plants - that's how I've come by some of my very favorite plants in my garden. Thanks so much for sharing at Mom On Timeout!
