OK, so this technology stuff is pretty neat, isn’t it? First it gives us the internet and smart phones and now this? Let me introduce you to my new best friend when it comes to lighting in this old, weird, quirky house of ours. The smart and talented SYLVANIA LIGHTIFY Classic A Lamp Bulb! I’ll just call it “LIGHTIFY” from here on out. 🙂
I know. “Seriously, Courtenay? A lightbulb? Not the most exciting subject ever.” And yet, you’re about to see that it actually kinda is. I was honestly prepared to be completely unimpressed by this lightbulb when I agreed to test it out, but I have to say that once I got it up and running, I couldn’t stop myself from playing with all the different settings on it all evening long. It really is pretty fun!
LIGHTIFY is a smart lighting device that you can control wirelessly using any Apple or Android device and the free LIGHTIFY app. It can switch from warm coloured light to cool coloured light, which really helps you change the way your decor looks and the mood of your room using the same device and light-fixture. It also really helps cut down on the need for so many different light sources in a room to use for all different purposes. One lamp can do it all! LIGHTIFY also uses up to 80% less energy compared to regular bulbs and it’s mercury free, so it’s a better choice than compact fluorescent bulbs.
You know that moment at bedtime where you try to beat your husband to bed so that you don’t have to be the last one to turn off all the lights? It totally takes care of that. You know that moment where you’re like “I know I’m supposed to be energy efficient, but the light from these efficient bulbs is so cold!” and then five minutes later you’re like “Darn, dark, orangey incandescent bulbs! Why can’t you be brighter and whiter? Why can’t I see anything!” It takes care of that too!
We definitely have a lot of lighting issues that need to be resolved in our house and they’re all super labor-intensive. These old houses just weren’t made to be lit all fancy like we’re used to in this day and age. Actually, or house didn’t have any electricity at all when it was built, so it wasn’t made to be lit at all. 🙂 I love how I can do something so simple, like change a light bulb, and have such a big impact on the lighting in my home. Fewer renovations on my to-do list are always a welcome change! So let me show you some of the fun I had with this thing!
First of all, let’s just talk about how you can control this light bulb from your phone. From anywhere in the world. I know. Whoa. So you can be in a hotel room hours away and you can turn on your lights to make your home look lived-in right from your phone and you don’t have to fiddle with those timer thingies or just leave lights on for weeks on end all over the house. Or you can turn the lights on just as you’re getting home so you’re not walking in to a dark house. Or you can turn the kitchen lights off at the end of the night right from your bedside table.
You can make it brighter or dimmer, warmer or cooler with just a swipe of your screen or you can use the presets that have been expertly-designed to be the perfect lighting for relaxing time, or for active time when you need to be alert and productive. There’s even one to help your plants grow!
I have to admit that I got a little excited and decided that I would try to scare Chris by being in the kitchen and turning the lamp on and off. Of course I got all giggly, thinking I was being so funny so I totally ruined it, but at least I had fun. 🙂
Here’s how my living room looks with the bulb on the “Relax” setting.
Here’s how it looks with the “Active” setting.
And here’s how it looked on my own customized setting: A little combination of the two.
I really loved the Active setting even though I’m not usually one to like cooler light tones. It’s such a nice, refreshing, bright white light and it’s perfect for adding a little extra brightness when I’m sitting down and working during the day and want to keep my energy levels up!
