This is the absolute smartest, most clever way to freeze bananas for all of your favourite banana recipes!
I had a little moment of clarity a few years ago when it comes to the topic of how to freeze bananas and it’s made such a difference for me in my kitchen. I absolutely love baking banana bread and using bananas in smoothies and this has just made my life so much easier.
This is so simple that it’s actually pretty funny, but I bet there are quite a few others out there who have been doing this the way I used to without even thinking of it!
You see, I grew up knowing that frozen bananas are black. Everyone knows that right? So when I grew up and started freezing bananas, I knew that all was right in the world when I saw that my bananas were black too. Except, when you think about it, that means that you’re freezing your bananas in their peels, which makes no sense at all! But it was just the way that I thought it was done, so that’s what I did.
I realized one day how silly it was to freeze the bananas in their peels and then have to wait for them to defrost a little so I could remove the peels before using them. For some things, like banana bread, you can just kind of squeeze the banana goo out of the peels once they’ve defrosted a bit, and that works. But even that always seems a little gross.
The Smart Way to Freeze Bananas
Now I peel my bananas first, toss them in a container, usually broken in half, and they’re ready to use right out of the freezer! I can even defrost them for a minute in the microwave for baking and then mash them without making a black, gooey mess at all!
This is a great way to prevent wasted bananas too when a certain 4 year old in your house decides he wants a banana but then only takes one bite before abandoning it on the coffee table. Now I just break off the part with the bite mark at the top, and toss the rest in the frozen banana container in the freezer!
It’s a very little thing, but it’s kind of a big thing, you know? 🙂
How do you freeze bananas? Did you grow up freezing bananas in the peel too?
