There are so many uses for shower caps other than keeping your hair dry! Put that collection of shower caps from hotels to good use with some of these brilliant ideas!
I love to find really smart and useful alternative ways to use everyday items to help out around the house! We’ve been staying in a lot of hotels over the last year or so and I just knew those shower caps that I keep seeing on bathroom counters would be a great candidate for reusing elsewhere. I decided to start trying to come up with a few different ideas and I was surprised with how many kept popping into my head once I got started! The next time you see a shower cap in a hotel, throw it in your bag and bring it home with you! It really is a very versatile thing to have around!
If you don’t find yourself visiting hotels very often, you can also buy a giant pack of 100 shower caps for next-to-nothing. 🙂
Here’s a little video of me demonstrating a few of the many uses for shower caps!
Use One to Pack Shoes
I love to use packing cubes to keep my shoes safe in my suitcase and to keep my shoes from getting my clothes dirty as well. What if you’re already at the hotel and you’re packing up to go home though? If it’s time to pack up your shoes and you realize that they’re a bit muddy or that you forgot your shoe bag at home, grab the shower cap from the bathroom and you have an instant shoe cover!
Use One to Cover Your Stand Mixer Bowl
If you keep your mixer on the counter like I do, then you know how dusty the bowl can get between uses. This is one my favourite uses for shower caps! Just stretch the shower cap over the bowl after you’ve cleaned it, dried it, and put it away and it will be clean and dust-free the next time you go to use it!
Use One to Cover Bowls of Food
This idea is particularly useful for when you’re eating outdoors and you want to protect your food from flies. The shower cap has an elastic so it’s easy to remove and replace each time someone wants to dish out some food onto their plate. Plastic wrap or aluminum foil can get ruined after being removed and replaced a time or two, but a shower cap can keep being reused over and over again!
Use One to Cover Paint Cans or Roller Trays Between Coats
DIYers can find many great uses for shower caps too! Use one to quickly cover paint cans or roller trays between coats to keep paint from drying out while you’re waiting to be able to start on the next coat!
Use One Over Pots with Seedlings in Them to Create a Mini Green House
If you have delicate young plants outside in flower pots and cold or stormy weather is moving in, just cover up your flower pots with a clear shower cap and they’ll be safe! This is also great to create a little green house for when you’re trying to encourage seedlings to grow and you want to keep the soil really moist.
Use One as a Dust Guard For Hanging Clothes
If you have fancy suits or dresses hanging up in your closet that you don’t use very often, cut a hole in the middle of a shower cap and slip it over the hanger to protect shoulders from dust and pet fur that can settle there over time, even when clothes are protected behind doors.
Use One to Wrap Up Wet Swim Wear
If you have wet swimwear that you need to pack in a bag or a suitcase, a shower cap is just about the perfect size to keep it from getting everything else wet! This is particularly useful if you’re at a hotel with a pool and don’t have access to plastic bags or special swimwear “wet bags” like you might usually use.
So those are some of my favourite new uses for shower caps! What clever ways have you found to use them?
