Packing an organized suitcase that allows you to fit in everything you need and actually find it is so easy if you have the right tools! These are my absolute favourites!
I’ve mentioned before that we travel quite a bit as a family for little mini trips and also (mostly) for Kennedy’s soccer. I’ve always been a little bit of a nervous traveler because of my love of routines and systems, and well, traveling somewhere new is pretty much the opposite of that! I’ve learned quite a few little tricks that allow me to feel more at ease with all the uncertainty that comes with traveling and a big part of that has been getting more organized and packing an organized suitcase.
I shared a few of my travel tips and hacks after we got home from our trip to Jamaica this winter, but I wanted to talk a little bit more specifically about the packing part of things and packing an organized suitcase today.
I talked about packing cubes in my last travel-related post and how much easier they’ve made it to pack and also to find the things I’ve packed once I get to my destination, so when EzPacking asked me if I’d be interested in trying out their packing cubes, I jumped at the chance. I looked over their website and I knew right away that I was going to love them, but now I have confirmation after having the chance to try them out for myself.
The difference between these cubes and others on the market is that these cubes are clear! So you can see everything that’s inside of them! It’s one of those ideas that’s simple, but also so so clever. I actually used to sometimes use clear plastic totes to pack so I could see everything inside easily, so I love that these cubes combine that idea with the convenience of being able to fit in a suitcase for any kind of travel.
Packing an Organized Suitcase with Cubes
When it comes to what’s actually in the cubes, a lot of people will often recommend packing all the items of a single outfit together. I find it’s more convenient and more realistic to actually pack each cube as though it’s a separate dresser drawer. So you have a “socks and underwear drawer” and a “shirt drawer” and a “pants drawer” and so on. That way you have the flexibility to mix and match your clothing according to the weather or whatever activity you end up doing without grabbing a sweater and dismantling a whole pre-prepared outfit.
I have the Complete Bundle EzPacking kit and I love that it comes with so many different sizes of packing cubes so you can use the size that actually fits the items you’re packing. There’s a Starter Set of cubes available as well if you’d prefer. I thought that my t-shirts for this trip would need a small cube, but when I put them in there I had way too much extra space. Lo and behold, they actually fit perfectly in an extra small cube and used up every square inch of space. This way they were nice and compact and saved overall space in the whole suitcase.
The bundle I have comes with 8 cubes: 2 Large, 2 Mediums, 2 Small, and 2 Extra Small, along with a folding board set (3 boards) to help you make things extra tidy. The bundle also comes with 2 shoe bags which are quite large. They can fit one pair of Chris’ shoes or about three of mine!
There’s also a laundry bag and my favorite little extra, this duffle bag that packs down to almost nothing, but that allows you to have access to another large bag for traveling home if you pick up a lot of souvenirs or do a bit more shopping that planned during your trip!
This is the duffle bag here!
My Organized Suitcase
For my packing, I used the large size for a few bulky sweaters, the small for a few pairs of pants (and an extra scarf, even though it breaks the “dresser drawer” rule), and the extra small for my tshirts. The extra small sizes are also great for socks and underwear, accessories, or even toiletries. Chris used a large for his things, which he packed by color, one side for grey clothes, one side for black clothes. Hey, whatever works for him! 🙂 He threw a couple of sweaters and a jacket in on top of everything, but obviously he packs pretty lightly.
I used a small and a medium to fit all of Jack’s little t-shirts, pants, sweaters, and an extra jacket and then we had one medium leftover to neatly hold all of Kennedy’s various colors of soccer uniforms, warm up gear etc. These bags make it really easy to fit a lot into a very tight space by allowing you to pack each little cube super tightly and efficiently.
We were able to (mostly) pack for our whole family in one suitcase despite the fact that we were packing for an outdoor tournament in April and had to fit in a few extra sweaters, jackets, and hats just in case the weather turned really ugly (which it did!). That’s a pretty impressive feat of packing, I’d say! 🙂 Kennedy did pack her own separate little suitcase for all her extra things she wanted to bring along, but it’s a lot better than us having to pack 4-5 different bags to bring everything we need! It’s happened in the past and it wasn’t pretty!
I loved how easily I was able to find everything once we got to the hotel even though we were all changing clothes pretty often depending on the time of day that our games were at and what the weather was like at that particular moment. These packing cubes definitely reduced a whole lot of stress and probably led to quite a few less little bickering incidents as well that weekend. 🙂
I’ll definitely be putting these packing cubes to good use from now on, and if you travel quite a bit as well, I’d definitely recommend trying out this system of packing!
