Have you ever seen how some people will hang a basket on their door instead of a wreath? I always think that looks really neat and it got me to thinking: What if we made our own similar hanging basket/bin/thing out of wood? I saw recently where someone in the US had a basket on their door and filled it with little flags for the Fourth of July and I thought this would be a perfect little project to do here for Canada Day!
I really love patriotic decor in the summertime and I’m always a little disappointed in myself when I don’t at least do a little something fun for Canada Day, so I picked up a pack of paper flags this year and decided to go for it. Well, in a simple, easy-peasy kind of way at least. 🙂
We started out by building this really simple angled bin out of some scrap wood. We trimmed it out a little bit and here’s where Chris’ bit of trivia for the day comes in. Do you know the name of this particular woodworking technique that we used here on the trim? Hint: It’s appropriate for the holiday we’re celebrating with this project.
Give up? It’s called a canoe! Because of how the wood is kind of hollowed out in the middle to fit over the corner of the piece. Fun right? 🙂
Anyway, you’ll notice that the hanger basket is actually on our wall next to the door instead of on the door itself. Once we had it made, that just seemed like such a perfect little spot for it, so that’s where it went!
I gave it a quick coat of my favorite Early American stain, filled it with some clippings from our boxwood hedge, which needed a bit of a haircut anyway, and stuck my flags in!
Obviously, it’s a super simple decorating project, but it gave me the look I wanted and I got to say that I did a little decorating in honour of Canada, so I’m happy with it!
I’m looking forward to using this little hanger basket in future seasons too. I’m thinking it will look great in the fall with some fall-themed goodies poking out!
This is a great little weekend project if you have a little outdoor wall space that could use something pretty to look at, or if you just want to try something different for your door wreath this season!
