Add this little pepper tip to the list of things that I can’t believe I didn’t already know. Seriously, we of course learn that the flavour between say, a green pepper and a red pepper can be different, but did you know that certain green peppers are better for certain things? In fact, the flavors of these two types of the same variety of green pepper are so different that you’ll be totally surprised once you test it out for yourself. The peppers have been trying to tell us about this all along, but we’ve been too busy chopping them up to take a moment to notice! 🙂
And here we’ve been all along thinking that a green pepper is just a green pepper!
I heard about this and I just had to test it out for myself because I honestly kind of didn’t believe it.
Here’s how you can tell the difference between these two types of pepper, first of all.
One has three bumps on the bottom and one has four! That’s it!
A small change in shape, but a world of peppery flavor difference!
Which kind of pepper you should use all depends on what you’re going to use it for.
Peppers with three bumps are a little more bitter, and better for adding that fresh green pepper taste to dishes that you’ll be cooking. So think of those as perfect for stir-frying, fajitas, and things like that.
Peppers with four bumps are much (much much much) sweeter and are more suited to eating raw. So they’re what you want for salads and veggies and dip.
Seriously, get one of each type of pepper, slice it up and try a piece from each for yourself. I was shocked at how bitter the three-bumped pepper was and how sweet the four-bumped pepper was. And here I’ve been thinking that a green pepper is just a green pepper all these years!
The way I like to remember this tip is like this: More bumps=more sweet! Easy as that!
And also, wow. It looks like I’m in the market for a new cutting board! I didn’t realize how rough this one is looking until I saw it in these photos!
Anyway!
Keep this little tip in mind the next time you’re picking out your peppers at the grocery store! Let me know if you can tell the difference too!
