I love making my own homemade seasoning mixes, and this homemade Italian Seasoning Recipe is a particularly handy one to have around. It’s true that you can just buy a big jar of pre-made Italian Seasoning from the store but it’s usually cheaper to make your own seasoning mixes using what you already have in your spice cupboard and it’s really great to be able to just mix up a seasoning mix on your own whenever you run out. I never even worry about keeping things like taco seasoning in the house anymore because I know I can always just mix my own whenever the mood strikes! Also, when you know how to mix these seasoning blends on your own, you can take things one step further and make them using your own dried herbs from your garden! That’s a goal of mine for this upcoming gardening season!
Italian Seasoning is great in Italian dishes of course, but it’s also a pretty versatile, good-for-everything seasoning mix. Feel free to mix up a double batch if you like to cook a lot because this one can be used often for all kinds of things! If you want to whip up your own Italian salad dressing, just mix 1 tablespoon of the dry seasoning mixture with 2-ish tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 3-ish tablespoons of oil, and 1-ish tablespoon of water, or according to your own tastes. 🙂
There are quite a few different versions of Italian Seasoning out there but this one I’m sharing with you here today is my very favorite. I think it has just the right balance of flavors and it seems to work really well time after time.
This recipe makes enough to fill a little mason jar, but as I said, feel free to double the recipe and use a larger container if that suits you better. 🙂
Here’s my recipe!
- 2 tablespoons of dried basil
- 2 tablespoons of dried oregano
- 1 tablespoon of dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon of dried rosemary
- 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl, mix them together well, then transfer them to an airtight container and store with the rest of your spices in a cool, dark place.
These homemade dried seasoning mixes also make great little gifts if you use cute little jars and maybe a fun label on them. Bonus points if the herbs all came from your own garden too!
Definitely give this one a try if you have all of these herbs and spices in your spice cupboard already. It’s a really fun and quick little project, but it’s so satisfying to cook with a spice blend that you made yourself!
Do you have a favorite DIY spice blend that you like to mix up yourself?
