Pumpkin spice season has arrived! Here is the absolute best way to make your own pumpkin spice blend using ingredients you probably have on hand already.
This time of year, everything seems to be pumpkin spice-flavored, doesn’t it? You really can’t be without a jar of this magical spice blend during the fall season, or you risk missing out on all the pumpkin goodness that autumn has to offer! If you’re running a little short and haven’t been able to get to the grocery store to pick up a new jar of pumpkin spice, don’t worry. You can make your own pumpkin pie spice with this super simple recipe, so you’ll still have the perfect pumpkin dessert for Thanksgiving dinner.
Chances are you already have everything that you need on hand, and if you don’t, it’s worthwhile to pick all the ingredients up in bulk so you can make just as much pumpkin spice as you need without paying extra for fancy packaging or the fact that this is a fun seasonal product that’s necessary for almost all pumpkin recipes. It’s really just a blend of a few common spices that come together to make something really special. As with most things, the homemade version is way more fragrant and flavorful than store bought.
Ingredients Needed for Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
Whenever I make a pumpkin pie recipe or anything made from canned pumpkin purée, like yummy spiced pumpkin muffins or pumpkin bread, I find I usually stray from the recipe a little bit because the way that they often do the spices in a lot of those recipes is just a little off to me. I played around with this spice blend recipe, and I think that what I came up with is the absolute best recipe for pumpkin spice and gets the quantities of everything exactly right, according to my tastes, of course.
Here’s what you’ll need to make this versatile aromatic spice blend.
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground cloves
- Freshly ground nutmeg
- Ground ginger
- Ground allspice
I’ve recently really been into cardamom (remember my cardamom fig thumbprint cookies?), so sometimes I’ll add a small teaspoon of that into the mix as well if I’m feeling fancy.
How to Make Your Own
Add all the ingredients by the teaspoon or tablespoon to a medium-sized bowl. Whisk everything together until all the ingredients are well blended and equally distributed.
Store the spice blend in small airtight jars or other containers until you’re ready to use it. This recipe makes about 1 cup, and it also makes your kitchen smell absolutely amazing while you’re mixing it up!
This is one of those great little projects that makes you feel like you’re really getting into the fall spirit of things, but it only takes a few minutes of your time. Definitely try this one out if you’re going to be doing some fall baking anytime soon!
Ideas for Using Pumpkin Pie Spice in Your Kitchen This Autumn
You can use this mix for any recipe you find in a cookbook that calls for pumpkin spice or pumpkin pie spice. They’re really the same thing, and this spice blend can be substituted for either.
Some of my favorites are my plant-based pumpkin snickerdoodles, slow cooker pumpkin dump cake, or candied pumpkin seeds, which I absolutely have to make every year. This easy pumpkin pie is also a must every fall, of course.
You can also use this spice blend in non-baking applications. If you love a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte, you can actually make your own healthier version at home with this homemade pumpkin coffee creamer. I think I’ll be making another batch of that this week, actually. My pumpkin spice latte recipe uses pure pumpkin, real maple syrup, and a plant-based milk blend with cashew and coconut milk, or even almond milk will do in a pinch. It tastes just like pumpkin pie filling without the crust or maybe pumpkin ice cream.
You can also stir a pinch of the spices with a little vanilla extract into your chai, hot cider, or smoothies for a seasonal spin. You’ll feel ready to carve a jack-o-lantern in no time.
