The 15 minute hallway renovation

I debated back and forth a bit with myself this week about whether or not to show you yet another update on my front hall. I've already shown you soooo many photos of a half-finished hall, how much more can you really take? How interesting can that really be?

The real answer is infinitely. It's infinitely interesting to some people, and as much as I love a good wham bam before and after, I have to admit that I love the long, painful drawn-out before and afters so much more. There's a real life going on there. There's a story.

The story here is the power of 15 minutes. Or sometimes 5 minutes.

About a week ago, I stopped trying and hoping to find big chunks of time to be a real serious DIYer and started just grabbing a brush and a yogurt container full of paint for just a few minutes every day, or every second day. It's part of my whole finding balance thing and not letting one thing totally take over my time. Even doing something for 5 minutes a week is a billion times better than doing nothing at all.

And once I started just doing a teeny tiny bit each day, that's when the progress really seemed to start picking up.

The progress and the fact that the hall just keeps looking prettier and prettier every day is like a perfect little gift I get to open every day. A free gift. Did I tell you I found the paint in my basement?

It's going to be stunning about 10 15-minute installments from now.

I feel like I should tell you that I can't wait to show you the big reveal, but the truth is I can wait. I'm loving this!

It is looking bright and fresh already. That is a great tip, to find 5 or 10 minutes to just do something. That is all the energy I have this week, in minute increments, but it really feels good to get some little things accomplished.

I love that! I too have a tendency to get sucked into projects while the house is falling apart around me. I've started working on things around here in 15 min. increments. So far, everything is getting touched, even the laundry. lol. Visiting from The DIY Dreamer. Would love it if you would share this at my Make it Pretty Monday party at The Dedicated House. http://thededicatedhouse.blogspot.com/2012/07/make-it-pretty-monday-week-5.html Wishing you a grand week. It's going to be fantastic! Love how you figured out a way to get it done, even if it's just 5 minutes a day!

I love that you posted this! I can't tell you how many projects I avoid because I feel like I don't have the time to do them! If I just did a little each day I would probably finish so much more.... Thanks for the inspiration!

Take care,

Trish

Courtenay, Sometimes you just have to chip away at your projects. I know your hall will be beautiful when finished. Thanks for joining the Open House Party this week.

I agree! It's hard to find the time to work on big projects like that! Good job with taking a little time out each day to work on something that will make a big change!

It is so true that we have to grab the time where we find it. 15 minutes or 5, at least you are making progress and so far it is beautiful. XO, Pinky

15 minutes a day adds up when you total time worked for the week. Before you know it your hall will be finished and looking gorgeous.

I really is amazing what you can accomplish with a little bit of consistent effort. We always seem to want it all right now but it rarely works out that way. Thanks for sharing your journey, things are really coming together.

Oh my gosh! You have changed my life. I thought it was just ME who looked at a big project, and turned the other way, because it was so intimidating.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
I am going to set the timer and start taping the dining room today. :D
