Sometimes the projects I work on are pretty and creative and interesting, but sometimes they're just necessary everyday kinda things. Chris was out of town last week and I spent a lot of time working on boring old real life type of things around the house. It was great.
Usually I try to show my house in a somewhat flattering light and showcase the few showcaseable areas cause, well, I want you to read my blog right? But I find for me it's almost as much fun looking into the "normal" parts of people's home, as it is looking at all the pretty stuff. So let's bring on the real stuff! Just this once.
And I'll probably delete it soon so it doesn't ruin my pretty little blog. I'm one of those.
Disaster! This is actually probably my favourite room in the house believe it or not. It's a back hall off of the master bedroom leading out to the deck. One day it's going to have floor to ceiling built in cupboards and it's going to be wonderful. For now.... eek.
Shudder. Okay, shudder-ish.
But look..
I fixed it! Well, you see what I mean. It's still not pretty, but I feel so much better about it.
I can find any vase I need!
So where did all those toys go?
Well, the other day I just remembered we had this unused closet in the front hall. I forgot about a closet. I'm smart like that.
I put the toys in there aaaand I even put a curtain over it. Not pretty, but so much better.
And then I put my feet up in my also not so pretty living room and felt pretty great about it all. OK, my living room is actually kind of pretty, but just not what I was looking at at this particular moment.
Any one else live in a real house sometimes?

Are you kidding? If I showed my 'real life', well, people would whisper about me behind my back, and I hate that! I love that you show your real true self, and hey, I would love to have that storage! You did a fine job of organzing it all, too. Love this post!
Oh don't delete it, this is just keeping it real. We have a newer home with tons of storage and still have spaces that need to be reorganized.
I think organizing these types of spots in our homes can be the most satisfying. It is fairly easy to take pretty pictures of nice areas of our homes (and easy to crop out the not so pretty.) You are off to a great start by sorting and finding spots for things. This can be challenging in an older home with character (and often not so many closets.) Keep an eye out for baskets on sale the next time you are at Canadian Tire etc. for loose items and you will like that area even more. I like to keep shelf heights & depths in a little notebook in my purse in case I stumble on a good sale of containers.
The curtain on the closet is a great idea too.
I love when we see real life. I shared my bonus room last year and surprised the Hoarders show didn't show up at my door.
I also love when bloggers let us get a glimpse of real life! I had a blogger send me the sweetest message about how the toddler clutter in the background brought her back to her early years with her kids. I love your real life post!
Great idea to put the curtain up - hides a multitude of sins. I like reading about real life on other people's blogs, but I have to confess that I'm not brave enough to post most of it on mine. I think for me it is that lots of relatives read my blog and I don't want them thinking I'm more of a slob than I am. I don't care if strangers think that ;)
Taking care of a home can get real crazy when there are kids around, as soon as you put one thing away, something else is hauled out. My kitchen counter is forever a workspace for homworl folders and papers.
I feel more comfortable around people when they "keep it real". We all have somethings we don't like sharing but maybe we should. Great job organizing. Looks great.
I like posts about all aspects of making a home (which is why I clicked over from the A to Z party--hi!). And I think it's these small kinds of projects that make a big difference in how our homes work--which means how we feel in and about them. (Posted recently about cleaning up a bunch of school/crafting supplies, which are in our garage. Not pretty at all!) Glad you shared--
I live in a real house that gets dirty and has stuff piled all over and is not trendy at all. I would like to see MORE people like me - honest to goodness real women who live in real houses and have real lives -- too much to do and never enough time to do it! Projects that never get finished. Projects that turn out to be disasters! Dirty dishes on the kitchen counter, or in the sink. What about hearing from a husband who does NOT WANT TO SLEEP IN A FROU-FROU BEDROOM like the kind I see all over the internet these days. I mean, honestly, if I put a crystal "chandy" in my bedroom my significant other would probably throw it out the window! So please please, give us MORE real life, not less. I'm so tired of seeing these "miracle" solutions that just appear in perfectly designed, perfectly decorated, perfectly kept up homes. Puke!
Definitely don't delete it! I adore real posts.
Plus, it is just plain awesome that you have so much great storage space!!
I live in a real house. Thanks for sharing yours with us. Love that you use Melaleuca product too. They are amazing!
I agree that looking at the real can be so good too! Don't delete the post - it's you and its real - it's inspiring and encouraging in it's own way. And that's a good thing. :-)
Your "real" house is beautiful! I ilove the arched doorway into your den! The room that leads outside is an awesome space! You should see my craft room. It is like a bomb went off, not just pretty stacks like you have! Thanks for sharing!
Happy Easter!
Trish
You were busy...and it looks really organised now. A closet for toys? You lucky thing! I see you have a hand held Dyson - the most used item in my whole house - bless them!
I love it when people show their real spaces. And even if that space is not in its final form yet, I think you've done a great job of making it look nice and be very functional!
